Important Facts About Natural Skin Care

Wondering why natural skin care is all the rage? More and more companies (and families!) are “going natural” with their skin care routines, and there’s a reason. As the largest organ in your body, your skin absorbs whatever you apply to it.

And from showering to moisturizing to makeup, the average person applies more products to their skin each day than you’d think! So if there are harmful chemicals in your skin care products, those chemicals will eventually end up inside your body. Yikes!

If you’re concerned about your skin absorbing tons of harmful chemicals each day, here are a few tips about choosing natural skin care:

Make Sure “Natural” Is Really Natural

Toxic synthetic chemicals are the biggest issue in the beauty industry today, so it pays to hone a keen eye when it comes to examining product labels. For example, it’s counterintuitive, but unfortunately, the words “natural” and “all-natural” are not regulated labeling terms. A great resource is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database site, which rates popular cosmetics and personal-care products with hazard scores on a scale of 0 to 10, depending on their toxicity.

Say No to Fragrance

A loophole in federal law doesn’t require companies to declare any of the dozens of toxic chemicals that a single product’s fragrance mixture could contain. Artificial fragrances, which frequently contain phthalates, can also trigger allergic reactions and other health problems. Be mindful of the hidden dangers that “fragrance” or “parfum” listed on ingredients labels can pose, and always choose fragrance-free products.

Choose Organic Beauty and Grooming Products

Organic ingredients are those grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, which is healthier for the planet and healthier for our bodies. Better yet are botanicals grown using biodynamic farming methods, which go beyond organic by emphasizing an even more holistic relationship between the soil, plants, and animals. The USDA National Organic Program has been certifying personal-care products since 2003, and an increasing number of organic skincare products now bear the USDA organic seal. To tell if a product is biodynamic-certified, look for Demeter U.S.A.’s stamp of approval on the label.

Natural Skin Care or Organic: What’s The Difference?

Want to know more about the core differences are between “natural” skin care, “organic” skin care, and your average skin care products? Let’s take a deeper look!

Natural Skin Care

Natural Skin Care:

“Legally, this means nothing—it’s a completely unregulated term and should be thought of as pure marketing,” says Grigore. “It will generally mean that at least some natural ingredients have been used in the formula, but a product can be labeled as natural and contain up to 30 percent synthetic ingredients.” Look at the label and if the product is full of ingredients born in a lab (ethyl acetate, nitrocellulose, red 11, etc.) and the only from-the-earth one you recognize is buried at the bottom, that means it’s hardly natural. If all the ingredients listed are just the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) Latin names for things you recognize—for example: sodium cocoate is saponified coconut oil—the product is all-natural.

Organic Skin Care:

“The use of the word organic is actually highly regulated, and legally means a brand or ingredient has been certified by the USDA. You should see an accompanying logo that confirms this; if you don’t, it means nothing and they are about to get in trouble. If you do see the logo, it means that said ingredient (or almost 100% of the ingredients in an organic product) have been grown and processed under a very strict code of cleanliness, with no pesticides or fertilizers, and absolutely no genetically modified organisms.”
