Benefits of a Detox

What Are The Benefits Of A Detox?

A Detox Can Be A Real Boost For Your Health, Immune System And Energy Levels – And It’s A Great Start For Efficient Weight Loss

Have you ever wondered, what the benefits are of a detox?

Or if it’s just a trendy thing mentioned in the health magazines now and then?

The fact is, that for most adults a detox 1-2 times per year can be a real health and energy booster, and it’s also a great thing to do if you want to lose weight.

After you do a detoxification of your body, you’ll not only feel lighter, more energized and more clear-headed … but your body will also be primed for faster, more energy-efficient weight loss.

Chances are you’ll see a drop on your scale during the first few days of your detox.

Moreover, only a clean body can absorb ALL the high quality nutrients you’re about to give it.

What does it really mean to detox?

The body eliminates toxins in the liver and also through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. To do a detox basically means to help your body cleanse the blood and get rid of toxins from your body.

The reason you want to get rid of impurities and toxins is that they may cause chronic inflammation in your body and may be the reason behind several health problems and other issues you suffer from.

We are exposed to toxins every day from different sources, for example:

  • From what we eat and drink
  • From smog and pollution in the air
  • From prescription drugs we take
  • From chemicals in personal care products we use (like shampoo and shower gel)
  • From chemicals we use indoors (for cleaning, laundry etc)
  • From chemicals we use outdoors (pesticides etc)

If you have any of these health issues – it may be related to toxin buildup in your body…

When our bodies can’t manage the overwhelm of all toxins, then chances are that all the toxins and waste from our digestive system won’t be eliminated properly.

Instead, these toxins start to build up in our tissues and cells and this may cause problems like:

  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Joint pain
  • Mood swings
  • Food cravings
  • Belly fat and weight gain
  • Allergies
  • Skin Issues
  • Headaches
  • Infections
  • Weak immune system
  • Digestive issues
  • Problems with bloating, and / or constipation

So if you have any of the above mentioned issues or health problems, there is a chance you’ll feel more energized and also get rid of your health problem if you do a detox!

More Energy

To get rid of toxic build-ups in your body is THE secret to successful weight loss and permanent fat loss.

A detox is also beneficial if you want to lose weight – and for permanent fat loss.

Many weight loss programs ignore the importance of starting with a detox.

But it makes perfect sense that it’s more difficult for a clogged up, inflamed, and sugar-addicted body to lose weight and snap into shape than for a clean body.

That’s why it’s absolutely essential to start with a gentle detoxifying cleanse.

Is it not complicated to detox?

For some people a detox may sound like a punishment or a difficult thing to do, because they think they must starve themselves, or eat a complicated diet. They may also be afraid that they can’t keep up with their job, take care of their kids and family etc. while detoxing.

However, unless you have any kind of health condition or you want to do a “special” or advanced kind of detox, I would recommend you to do a “gentle detox”.

If you do what I call a gentle detox for 3-10 days, you can still function as normal, do your job etc. You will most likely get a headache in the beginning and I would recommend you to take it easy on exercise while doing it. But besides from that, it shouldn’t interfere with your “normal” everyday life.

So now the big question is: What should you eat and drink and NOT eat and drink while detoxing?

What should you eat and drink?

I’m not an expert on nutrition, but I’ve read and studied what some doctors and nutritionists say you should eat and drink and not eat and drink when you do a detox.

There are of course different opinions and there are also many different detox programs to follow. So it’s up to you to decide how extensive you want to detox, your overall health condition and so on, but for a gentle detox, here are some general tips what to eat and drink to help your body detox.

AVOID to eat and drink the following: Red meat, poultry (chicken and turkey), processed meat (sausages, burgers etc), wheat (bread and pasta), milk and dairy products, butter, salted nuts and similar, sweets, sugar, alcohol, tea and coffee.

In general, the most important things to avoid are sugar, processed foods, wheat and gluten (grains in general), red meat, alcohol and coffee (caffein).

Think natural, organic and CLEAN.

This is what you CAN eat and drink: Fresh, organic fruits and berries, juicing and smoothies (no added sugar), herbal teas, green tea,  fresh and organic vegetables such as onions, garlic, carrots, cabbage, beets, beans, artichokes, cauliflower, broccoli and bruxelles sprouts.

Fermented foods and drinks can be beneficial when detoxing, and herbs like dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle support the detoxification process.

You can also eat lentils, organic tofu, quorn, oats, organic free-range eggs and wild caught fish, e.g. cod, trout and salmon.

I know, it’s really hard to totally change what you eat, but it’s only for a few days…! And you will feel the difference afterward!

However, you can also add avocado, brown rice, organic free-range chicken (no skin) to the menu if you find it hard to only eat fish and vegetables for lunch and dinner.

Tip: Make an appointment with a nutritionist who can create a perfect detox diet plan together with you for your specific needs.

Important! Remember to drink lots of water, around 3-5 litres per day (approx 1 gallon).

Drink lots of WATER – that’s super important!

Purified water is always the best drink you can have.

But when you detox you must make sure you REALLY drink a lot!

It’s good for your liver and kidneys and if you drink a lot of water, it will help your kidneys to flush away all the toxins.

If you’re not drinking enough water, then your liver has to take up the slack, meaning that instead of empowering your digestion and metabolism full-force, your liver has to slow things down to take care of the “backlog” from the kidneys…

Don’t use any artificial sweeteners or additives in your water.

If you want to add some taste to it, add lemons, lime, grapefruit, cucumber or strawberries to your water. This will support the detoxification.
