Lose Weight and Stay Slim

5 Things To Avoid If You Want To Lose Weight and Stay Slim Long-Term

Are you struggling to lose weight and stay slim? Have you tried lots of different diets, “magic” weight loss pills and shakes, but are still struggling?

Truth is, a new diet or the latest trendy weight loss shake or pill may help you to lose some weight and stay slim – but only for a short while.

For a long-lasting result, it’s necessary and much more effective to re-consider your choices of drinks and food, and your eating habits, than testing every new diet and weight loss shake out there.

Avoid These 5 things To Lose Weight and STAY Slim:

1. Strict Diets

Don’t follow every new trendy “lose weight fast” diet, it’s in any case not a good long-term solution.

If you’re desperate to lose a few pounds for a special occasion, you may think of starting a strict diet, like only eating grapefruits, only eating salads or juice fasting, but try not to.

Strict diets are not healthy and if your body suddenly gets much less food and calories than it’s used to get, it will go into “starvation mood”. In starvation mode, it holds on to fat and slows down the metabolism.

Therefore, even though you may lose a few pounds doing it – remember it’s not a healthy option and you’ll probably gain all the weight back as soon as you stop the strict diet.

2. Food Shopping On an Empty Stomach

Never go grocery shopping when you’re super-hungry. If you do that, you’ll probably end up buying many items you wouldn’t buy otherwise, such as junk food, cookies, candy etc.

However, allow yourself to have ONE cheat day per week when you can eat what you want, even your favorite junk food! But be smart about it.

Don’t buy big packets of your favorite candy or cookies and then keep it in your pantry – it’s a big risk that you can’t resist it!

It’s a lot smarter to only buy small packages that you finish on your weekly cheat day and have ONLY healthy snacks available during the rest of the week, such as walnuts, pistachios and almonds.

You can also bag and freeze smoothie ingredients, in that way, whenever you’re craving something sweet, you can easily mix a delicious smoothie in no time.

3. Skipping Meals

It’s easy to believe that skipping a meal is good for weight loss.

But what happens when you do this is that the hormone Leptin doesn’t work as well as it should. This hormone signals your brain when you’ve had enough food and you don’t need to eat anymore, it’s sometimes called the satiety hormone. Leptin also helps regulate the energy balance, so the body doesn’t trigger hunger responses when it doesn’t need energy. This “signal system” and energy balance works best if you eat something regularly every 4-5 hours.

The risk with skipping meals is also that you’ll be in “starvation” mode, which slows down the metabolism, and also causes you to overeat at your next meal because you’re starving.

Therefore, try to always eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2-3 healthy snacks during the day. By doing so, you also help to maintain a stable blood sugar level.

4. Fat-Free Foods

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, a new trend in the food industry arrived: Fat-free and Low-fat food.

Everything should be fat-free. Fat-free margarine (butter), fat-free milk, low-fat cream, low-fat bagels etc.

It’s true that it’s not healthy to eat LOTS of fat, but our bodies and brains NEED a small amount of healthy fat every day to function properly.

Fat is e.g. needed for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D and E, and fat is also needed to produce some of our hormones. So in general, avoid “fat-free” foods and dairy, also avoid processed foods as much as possible and eat “real” food instead.

Keep in mind to eat some healthy fats every day. Avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, butter from grass fed cows and salmon are some examples of healthy fat.

5. Sweet Drinks and Zero Calorie Drinks

Many people who struggle to lose weight and to stay slim, are careful with what they eat, however they seem to forget about what they drink….

If you want to lose weight and to stay slim, you can’t drink lots of sodas, coffee with lots of sugar and milk, ice tea with lots of sugar, juices or alcoholic beverages.

All these kinds of drinks contain a massive amount of calories.

Also avoid zero calorie drinks, if they contain artificial sweeteners. They are no good for your health.

Instead, drink plenty of purified water throughout the day. Add some fruit, veggie or herb to give a flavor to it if you like, such as slices of lemon, strawberry, cucumber, mint and basil.
