Is Mineral Makeup Always A Safer And Healthier Choice?
Have you ever wondered, what’s in the makeup you put on your face every day?
There are many girls and women using makeup every day who don’t consider what ingredients their makeup is made of. They simply assume that makeup they can buy in shops is also safe to use…
However, in many countries the ingredients and chemicals used in makeup are not very restricted or regulated by law.
The reason why you should pay attention to the ingredients in your makeup is that everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your system – entering your bloodstream and organs.
What you DON’T want on your skin….
So knowing that, consider this:
- There might be traces of lead in your lipstick, as well as BHA (a potential carcinogen).
- Your mascara may have traces of mercury and coal tar (another carcinogen).
- Your eye shadow can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which is also linked to cancer.
- Talc, a known carcinogen, is still found in some makeup items.
This is NOT what you want on our skin. Especially knowing the risk those potentially harmful ingredients may cause if they enter your bloodstream and organs…
So what about mineral makeup, is it always a safe choice?
And what exactly is pure mineral makeup?
Mineral makeup is cosmetics made of naturally occurring minerals mined from the earth.
Mineral makeup is made of minerals like zinc oxide, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, mica and ultramarine.
The minerals are ground up into fine particles and then used to make powders, foundations, blushers, bronzers, eye shadows and so on.
Even ancient cultures used ground-up natural minerals as a means of applying color to the skin for decoration, camouflage, war paints, to enhance their eyes etc.
A key difference from conventional makeup is what’s NOT in pure mineral makeup.
Pure mineral makeup is free of controversial ingredients like parabens, phthalates and talc, as well as synthetic dyes and fragrances that can clog the pores, cause skin irritation and other skin and health issues as well.
This makes mineral makeup very suitable for people with sensitive or acne prone skin – and for everyone who wants to use safer and healthier makeup.
A lot of people think that mineral makeup only comes in loose powder form, but that’s not correct! It has come a long way since its original “incarnation” as a loose powder.
You can now try everything from pressed powders to mineral lipstick.
Is all “mineral makeup” pure and safe to use?
Pure mineral makeup has very few ingredients, when you buy mineral makeup, you expect it to be free of potentially skin irritating or health damaging ingredients.
But no, it’s not true that “mineral makeup” always is safe, healthy and free of potentially harmful ingredients.
Some makeup brands call it “mineral makeup” or “natural makeup”, but may still include ingredients like parabens, synthetic dyes, talc and bismuth oxychloride.
That’s why I use the term pure mineral makeup in this article, to make a distinction from “mineral makeup” that is made of minerals, but also has ingredients added that can be harmful or irritating on the skin.
For example, bismuth oxychloride has been used in cosmetics for many years because it’s a cheap filler, it gives a ‘silky’ texture, it feels smooth and nice on the skin and it imparts a shimmering glow.
However, it can be very irritating on the skin and cause redness.
So if you have sensitive or acne prone skin, you should avoid makeup with this ingredient.
Here are 5 benefits of pure mineral makeup that makes it a great choice for your skin:
1) Pure mineral makeup is healthier and safer to use
An important benefit of pure mineral makeup is that it’s healthier and safer to use because it’s free of petrochemicals, coal-derived ingredients, phthalates, parabens, synthetic dyes, fragrances and colors and also other synthetic additives and fillers.
Synthetic fragrances, dyes and colors have been identified as one of the leading causes of allergic reactions in makeup.
Pure mineral makeup doesn’t need synthetic dyes, because the colors are derived from naturally occurring mineral pigments.
2) Pure mineral makeup is non-irritating and anti-inflammatory
Since pure mineral makeup is made of natural ingredients it’s less irritating for the skin – unless you should happen to be sensitive or allergic to a specific mineral that is.
Zinc oxide has also anti-inflammatory effects, so it can help to soothe irritated or inflamed skin.
3) Pure mineral makeup doesn’t clog pores
By its very nature, pure mineral makeup is oil free and allows the skin to breathe. Therefore, it doesn’t clog the pores or promote acne. This is a really huge benefit for anyone with oily or acne prone skin.
It also doesn’t harbor bacteria. This allows acne blemishes to be fully covered or concealed without further aggravating them.
Pure mineral makeup cannot cure acne, but the skin has a much better chance of healing while wearing it, compared to traditional makeup that often clog the pores.
4) Pure mineral makeup minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives a more “natural” look
Since mineral makeup is oil-free and very light, it also minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Traditional makeup is often times heavier and more creamy, and may therefore make lines and wrinkles more visible and accentuated.
Moreover, mineral makeup gives a more natural “no makeup” look.
But, it still gives a great coverage! Pure mineral makeup can give you a perfectly flawless skin – fast and easy.
5) Pure mineral makeup act as a natural sun block
The minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are natural sun blocks. These minerals filter out UVA and UVB rays effectively and can give sun protection of up to SPF 20.
Since mineral makeup with any of these two minerals, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, offer some degree of sun protection, you don’t have to use a sun block on your face every day in addition to your makeup – only if you’re going to spend a lot of time in the sun.
Besides giving you a beautiful, natural and radiant look – pure mineral makeup is also a healthy and safer choice!
For everyone who wants to use safer and healthier makeup, pure mineral makeup is a great choice with many benefits!
And if you have sensitive or acne prone skin, pure mineral makeup is probably your best choice, since it doesn’t have known irritants and also doesn’t clog the pores.
You can easily do some research on the internet to find where to buy pure mineral makeup where you live – or on the internet.
Make sure though to read the labels so that it’s really PURE mineral makeup and doesn’t have any of those ingredients and fillers you DON’T want!
Pure mineral makeup may cost a bit more, but it lasts a long time – and considering the negative effects some ingredients in other makeup may cause your skin and health – it’s definitely worth it.
This is my personal choice of toxic free and safe pure mineral makeup that gives a beautiful, natural and glowing look!
